Qualifying Requirements
These are the qualifying requirements to become a student in either of Semi Academy's CDL training programs:
- possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver license
- have a satisfactory motor vehicle driving record
- be eligible for a Michigan CDL license
- pass the DOT medical examination including alcohol test and drug screen
- obtain and maintain current Medical Examination Card
- have job level reading and comprehension skills
- have the ability to perform basic math computations
- have a basic level of physical ability to be able to climb into and out of tractor cabs and loading docks and also have the stamina to drive and maintain concentration
Weeks One and Two
Classroom
- participate in classroom activities
- do the homework assignments
- maintain passing grades on the classroom activities
- maintain log sheets of all hours and also identify BTW (Behind The Wheel) hours
Secretary of State
- pass the Michigan written CDL test
- obtain a TIP (Temporary Instruction Permit)
Range
- understand and learn to do a pre-trip vehicle inspection
- learn to shift tractor as instructed using the double clutch method
- complete the requirements and pass the coupling tractor-trailer test
- complete the requirements and pass the range skills driving test (NOTE: If you do not pass the range test, you will be dropped from the program!)
Week Three
On the Range
You must maintain and improve range skills learned in weeks one and two.
On the Road
You will start operating a tractor-trailer unit on the road.
Week Four
Range and Road
- maintain and improve range skills
- maintain and improve road skills
Driver Skills Test
You must pass the CDL Driver Skills Test. (This test may be scheduled during week 4.)
Classroom
You must pass the Truck Operators Knowledge Examination.
Graduation
You will obtain your certificate of achievement and your student transcript. Congratulations! You have now qualified to go to the Secretary of State and obtain your CDL.
Training
I understand that if accepted, I will be enrolled in the Semi Academy Professional Truck Driver Training Program. This program consists of four weeks (up to 160 hours) of classroom, range and road training in the operation of tractor/trailer units. Some students may need additional time to meet certain course requirements. Students needing additional time to meet the course requirements, after the finish of the scheduled program, may arrange to purchase training time at an additional cost.
Cost
The Application Fee is due and payable at the time of enrollment. The Tuition Fee is due and payable prior to the start of classes. Exceptions to this policy must be approved in writing by Semi Academy.

Note: There is a $100.00 charge for a state-required CDL road test. This charge is paid separately to Academy Testing.
Refund Policy
Cancellation Prior to Commencement of Classes
- If cancellation is requested in writing within three (3) business days after signing the Enrollment Contract, all funds paid except the Application Fee will be refunded.
- If Semi Academy does not accept the applicant, or cancels the Enrollment Contract, then all funds paid except the Application Fee will be refunded.
- If cancellation is requested in writing prior to the start of classes, then all funds paid except the Application Fee will be refunded.
Withdrawal/Termination After Start of Classes:
If withdrawal or termination occurs after the start of classes, then Semi Academy shall retain the following:

All training materials must be returned before a refund is issued.
In the case of hardship or other circumstances beyond the control of the student that make it impractical to complete the course in a timely manner, Semi Academy will offer a reasonable settlement that is fair to both parties. Such a settlement may include an option to make up missed work at an adjusted cost.
